Motivation Monday: If you hate what you do, you won't be good at it?
Why follow your passion is as bad advice as faking it till you make it.
The internet is full of "Follow your passion" quotes.
It's all bollocks.
Do you think unicorns, if they existed, wouldn't have a bad day?
And on the opposite side - Do you really think you can fake something you genuinely hate for a decade? For a year? For a month? What about for a day?
You will not be good at it if you aren't motivated and hate the job.
So either stop hating it (find out why you hate it in the first place) or find a less hates job.
Don't search for rainbows and passion. They are not there.
There is no such thing as a perfect job. Or the worst job in the world (at least if you are in a place where you can read this).
So if you don't like your job, find out why. Suck all you can out of it regarding knowledge, skills, networking, and pay. And then move on.
Remember, jobs come and go. Your attitude towards the difficult task, skills, and network is a little permanent.
So don't whine about your job. Do something about it.
Don't whine because:
- you make your dopamine system to make you suffer more;
- nobody likes a whiner;
- it does not help anybody;
- is a complete waste of time and energy.
Instead do:
- check if there is something good you can take out of your job;
- check what connections you can establish or foster;
- update your CV and apply for some jobs, even if totally out of your league;
- be nice to clients (sometimes - very often in fact - some even "steal" you from the supplier, if it is B2B, or give you a good recommendation)
BlackSwan tactic:
- find what makes you miserable, check if you are the only one in the sector, and find a solution;
- check legal aspects, but try to sell the solution to the sector;
- your worst nightmare can be your best moneymaker - you know the ins and outs - monetize it.
